Missing iNaturalist transfers

Submitted by BDeed on

Hello,

I have been looking into downloading data from iRecord which has been transferred there from iNaturalist. Our VC Botanist insisted that some species (Research Grade) were missing and that iRecord was incomplete. On looking into this there do seem to be records missing. Specifically many Taraxacum, including Taraxacum officinale. The difference is quite substantial with some 2,500 observations at Research Grade on iNaturalist and just 45 transferred to across (i checked the date range, source and area were the same filters).

We can go direct to iNaturalist for the data instead but we now have an issue in that we don't know which research grade observations are transferring across and which are not.

Is there a list of exclusions we can use to identify which species we need to access outside iRecord?

I think iNat records only transfer across if the recorder has given their record an appropriate licence to allow the records to be used.  Is that what is happening?

David is correct (see https://irecord.org.uk/help/linking-inaturalist). Another possible issue is that the UK Species Inventory (used by iRecord) does not yet contain the species concerned, particularly for for garden plants only recently recorded in the wild, and the BSBI are likley to be involved in updating this at some point. There are also some issues with certain aggregates not matching up between the two taxonomies (UKSI and iNat), and we have work is in progress to rectify this.
