Duplicate records

Submitted by Duncan Cooke on

When I submit a record, I will sometimes look to see how many records have been submitted of that species and have noticed a number of duplicate/identical records. For example, today I submitted a record of Crataerina hirundinis and when I looked at ''Accepted as correct records only'' it is showing 25 records, but two records appear to be duplicated, showing the same dates and photos. I have also noticed on occasions that some people are using the same photos for different records. Surely the photos submitted should correspond with the record being being submitted, so the record can be verified correctly.

I have also noticed what look like duplicates. Probable cause in that caseis same material being entered into iRecord and imported from iNaturalist. User names subtly different.
Not had to deal with multiple use of the same photograph, but should it arise I would probably reject the records as it isn’t clear what instance is supported by the picture.

The problem seems to be that people are submitting their finds to specific recording schemes for verification and then both are recording the same find on iRecord. This has happened to me once when trying to id a hoverfly. I now always say that I will iRecord if I get a positive id when submitting a request for identification/confirmation.  I think this is something the administration of iRecord need to look at because it makes a mockery of the figures.  For example, I recently entered a record of Crataerina hirundinis and when I clicked on 'Accepted as correct records only' it was showing 25 records, but 2 were duplicates, 8%. ( I sent a notification to both and one has since been removed ).
