I am struggling to use the wider ref square grid above 10sq metre even when expanding the location it only selects the 10sq

Zoom out
The further out you are, the larger the square option you have. So if you happen to have selected a 10m2 but don't want that level of precision, delete the grid reference and use the + and - options on the map to zoom out. You will then reach the stage where the squares are 100m2 and can select one, or keep going and get to 1km2.
if youve selected a 10x10m square it will show an 8 digit grid ref eg SU 8451 7445. If you want to make this a 100mx 100m square, just delete the 4th and 8th digit, so that the example given becomes SU 845 744. Personally I record most things to 10m sq anyway as I never know how localised something might be and sometimes it might be a small flush area within a wider habitat. At least recording to higher precision, that detail is retained but the record can still be plotted at monad or hectad for mapping/distro report purposes.
