Problem deleting a single record

Submitted by clive washington on

I’m trying to delete individual records that I now know are wrong.  I find the record and click the edit button, but the dialog that comes up says “You are editing a single record that is part of a larger list of records, so any changes to the overall information such as edits to the date or map reference will affect the whole list of records”

It then selects all the records submitted on that date and proceeds to delete them all!  I can't find a way of just deleting the one record.  It doesn't always do this - sometimes it lets me delete a single record quite happily, even if other records exist for that date and location.

This is the way I delete individual records.

  1. In the Explore my records view, find the record to be deleted and click on it. Way over to the right click on the topmost icon which has the hover text "View record details". DO NOT be tempted to click the bottommost icon labelled "Edit this record".
  2. You should then be shown a page with the record details summarised. Find the button Edit this record under the social media icons and click on it.
  3. What displays next depends on whether it was entered as a single record or as a list e.g. via spreadsheet upload.
  4. If the record was entered as a single record you will be shown the Enter a casual record page. Scroll down to the end and press the Delete record button, then Save.
  5. If the record was part of a list you will be shown the Enter a list of records page. Scroll down to the species name shown on a yellow background. Click on the little dustbin icon next to the name so that the name becomes greyed out. Scroll down to the end and press the Save button.

In my view this is very clunky user interface, especially given the contradictory messages whereby you get to choose Delete list of records even though you started off wanting to Edit a single record.

We could also use a way of easily selecting multiple records from a list (say with certain criteria) then deleting all of the selection after giving confirmation. It should work the same way as Windows multiple file deletion. Currently you can only delete either one record at a time, or (as you found to your cost) all records in the entered list.
