iRecord & iNaturalist

Submitted by scarpermac on

It has just been brought to my attention that I may be causing duplicate records - recording both on iRecord and iNaturalist. I had been partly using iNaturalist as a way to check / verify some identifications before recording here - however if this causes duplicate this is obvioulsy not desirable (I have different "names" on each platform too). The particular record where this was flagged up was a Merodon equestris - so is this applicable ACROSS SPECIES? Any info / suggestions would be very welcome. Thanks, Mac.

I have been having a discussion about duplicate records on a post of my own and your post was mentioned, here; https://irecord.org.uk/forum/general-discussion/more-duplicate-records

For guidance regarding the relationship between iNaturalist and iRecord: please see this help page.

I hope this helps, but to be honest, if my post is anything to go by,  there seems to be little understanding of the problem or enthusiasm for clearing up or stopping duplicate records on iRecord, (whether it be for funding, or other reasons), which I find both frustrating and disappointing.

Good luck !

Thanks for your response Duncan I can see this is an ongoing and not necessarily straightforward issue; given your discussion is with (as far as I can see) from one other "verifier" there may well be other responses which differ. I think I will try to keep things separate - alarm bells really ringing when I see mention of iSpot which I have used (though little recently) but was thinking about using again this year, I hesitate more than ever. As a very keen, but clearly amatuer, recorder I am always keen that my records might count for something useful (other than my own satisfaction / obsessions). A more careful / streamlined approach from here on...
