Hi. New to this so please be patient with me. I had a Privet Hawk Moth yesterday in my garden. It was huge so I knew it wasn’t your average moth. Having googled it I can see it’s definitely a Privet Hawk Moth but I cannot upload it to my records because it’s not listed. I tried uploading it under the Hummingbird Hawk Moth but it got rejected. Obviously I know it isn’t a Hummingbird Hawk Moth and I did explain this in my comments but it got rejected still. So to cut a long story short how do you upload a specific species that isn’t listed? Thank you
iRecord uses the UK Species Inventory (UKSI) for its species lists. Very occasionally something will be missing, but typically only if it's been recorded newly in Britain very recently. The majority of cases where a species appears to be missing are therefore down to either name changes, spelling errors or hypens. In this case Privet Hawk is on the species list, however the second part is hyphenated, so it appears as Privet Hawk-moth.
In general, if you don't find something first time, start typing the name slowly as the form starts trying to match as you go along, so for example by the time you get to Privet Ha.. I think it should have picked the species up.
