Odd grid references for mammal records comming through from BTO Birdtrack

Submitted by GrahamCheckley on

I've been verifying the mammal records that are now being passed from the BTO Birdtrack system to iRecord and I've observed that in a few cases they point to odd locations, offshore Bats and Rabbits for example.  Here's an example record number 24976296.

I suspect that this is a result of how some grid references for sites defined on Birdtrack are being converted into location grid references on iRecord.  The records otherwise seem very reasonable and it's great to get them.

Can admin follow up on this?

Thanks for highlighting this example. As you suggest, there are some complications in the way that grid refs are calculated for the BirdTrack data, as described in the BirdTrack guidance available on the verifiers' resources page. There may not be an easy solution to this, but we are due to review the data import process with BTO in the coming months and it is helpful to have examples such as this.
