App slow to find grid reference

Submitted by Snowdome on

Has the way the app finds a grid reference changed? I find it very slow to find my location now. I can open up a grid reference app and have my location in 2 or 3 seconds. But the iRecord app can take 30s sometimes. It's really putting me off using it in the field .

Samsung Galaxy S10+ running Android 12.  I now start a GPS Logger (by BasicAirData) before iRecord so I get an accurate location all the time.

Thanks for reporting this. We haven't changed the algorithms but the underlying technology that we use was updated and this might have introduced some issues. So far it looks like this affects only Android users. Is there a way to consistently reproduce your GPS issues?

I haven't sat down and analysed it but I have just gone to put on a record of a House sparrow. Entered species opened up location and waited, the OS map appeared and the 3rd icon down on the map showed a rotating line. I waited and it took 45seconds for a grid reference with satellite view to appear.

Update - I have been using the app today and it has been finding my location in a few seconds. I do have the OS app running at the same recordingmy activity I done know if this will influence this. I'm guessing probably not.

I have used the new app version twice now on my Nokia X20 and am afraid I have just about given up on it. The old version was simple and intuitive to use in the field but I find the new app confusing and at the latest outing it failed to find the location. It is also easy to submit a record with only the species name and location entered and without having to enter any abundance, life stage or gender info. Editing the location on the website suggests it might be possible to enter a grid reference instead of the lat/long. However, manually typing in the grid ref and changing the projection to British Grid gets rejected and an incorrect lat/long value is assigned to the record.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the feedback. I understand you're talking about the iRecord App, is that right? If setting your grid-ref location on the website doesn't work, you can also do it in the app.

The failure to find your location aside, the new location page works very similarly to the previous app version. It is unclear to me what it is that you find different or hard in this app version. Can you give us some more specific information about where we could improve the app?

Cheers

I am also having a lot of difficulty getting the iRecord app to find my location when recording in the field. I have had to give up on several occasions and have submitted the records on my PC when I got home. It used to be a really quick way of recording in the field but it seems to have become over-complicated and less user-friendly as a result. I'm using a Samsung S20 FE with Android.
