Media licence B

Submitted by Juliet ten Doeschate on

What does everyone else put for the media licence? to add your photos. I had a look at the list and none of it means anything to me. Help would be appreciated. Thanks

Thank you both for taking the time to respond. That makes it a lot easier for me to make a choice. Thanks again, Juliet

I agree the number of difference licences can look a bit overwhelming. I'd ignore the share alike and no derivative options and then you are left with:

CC0 - Anyone can use your photo however they like with no acknowledgement

CC BY - Anyone can use your photo but must acknowledge you as the photographer

CC BY NC - The photo can be used with acknowledgement but only for non-commercial uses

ARR - stands for all rights reserved, so no-one can use your photo without your permission.

Personally I used the CC BY NC option - I'm quite happy for people to reproduce my pictures for presentations, downloadable ID guides, personal use etc but would want to be asked if someone was going to use it in a publication or something that they were intending to sell.

I use CC BY, as I want to fully allow sharing of my photos, whilst still getting proper attribution. Although the licence is quite permissive, I have still had numerous people contact me to ask for permission to use my photos, even though they didn't need to under the terms of the licence.

On the face of it, the NC licence seems attractive. However, it's actually far more restrictive than many people assume, mainly due to the legal vagueness of the term "non-commercial"

As far as I'm concerned, the main purpose of my photos is to help with identification, and I never have any thoughts about selling any of them myself. I also don't particularly care if the photos are used by some organisation in a way that could be interpreted as "commercial". It's all about sharing for me, and I'm not really concerned about the means to achieving that end.
