But this may be useful.. In my activity, a couple of 10km Brown Hare records block out the majority of the map area. In the search box for Common Name, you can type !Brown Hare, which tells it to show you everything except Brown Hare. The map reflects this search and the blocking squares are removed, allowing me to access everything below. Still not perfect as there are plenty of 1km squares that block out 100m and 10m records. But perhaps it will solve your problem.
