iRecord for formal survey

Submitted by BDeed on

Hello!

Just looking to pick the brains of the general community. I have recently started a new post which will involve survey of local sites. I really like iRecord and wouild like our new data collection to feed through it as a system. My previous post was with a LERC where i had some experience of using Indicia to design datasets and front end forms.

I guess my question is can anyone suggest the best approach, what do others do?

  • iRecord is great but the standard record entry forms don't capture all the information we need, we could enter species data here and capture other data elsewhere but that will duplicate effort and split information.
  • Activities might be a solution but there's no way to tailor entry forms.
  • Indicia would be ideal but as an individual i doubt the BRC would host (it's me and whoever else i can convince to use it) and setting up a warehouse myself would be excessive!

I feel there should be an Indicia 'lite' or some additional iRecord customisation but i appreciate how messy that could get architecturally...

Suggestions welcome!

p.s. will also post this in Indicia forum but following replies on both so no need to 'double reply'!

This seems to be possible already within iRecord as UKBMS data feed in with Wind speed, Temperature, etc. I'm requesting an extension to the existing Dragonfly-specific forms to facilitate site monitoring. See > https://github.com/BiologicalRecordsCentre/iRecord/issues/1444

Thanks for the reply David. I'd imagine UKBMS have an dataset on Indica that allows them to tailor the attributes that are being captured on their forms, many recording apps now also feed directly into Indicia/iRecord and capture additional/specific data. So it is certainly possible. Similarly the DRN have their own hosted datasets for their recording schemes which i would suspect is the driver behind your Dragonfly recording form.

The issue is i/my team are not an organisation or major recording project so can't take advantage of the Indica platform in that way, i guess my hope would be that some functionality could be enabled to enhance the activities within iRecord but i suspect this would be too much of a development headache for the team. I'll probably have to go for something non-iRecord/Indicia linked which is fair enough but i thought i'd ask.
