Sound files

Submitted by MandyT on

Might it be useful to be able to upload sound files as well as image files? That would enable e.g. records of bird song or recordings from bat detectors

Hi, I've managed to take a screenshot from my phone of some birdsongs from the Merlin ID app and uploaded them as photos. It gets some of the way to uplaoding a sound file. Neil

You can upload sound files (I've done so for bats on many an occasion) although the file size limit is pretty brutal meaning most need heavy trimming before they can go on here.

Hi, we have implemented the upload of sound files on the bat recording forms, such as this one, but not more widely at the moment. I will check whether this is something that could be extended to other recording forms.

Could I add my support to the suggestions for wider submission of sound files to help verify a record.

I am often able to approach close enough to get a decent sound recording of difficult to photograph/concealed birds that are readily identified by their song/call.

Can I strongly endorse the comment from dlronfree on 12/7: sound files can be quite crucial for birds not only from diagnostic/ID viewpoint but also facility in capturing them. If I claim a Blackcap and a verfier doesn't know me from Adam, I may not have the kit for a decent photo but a decent quality sound file is readily captured even with my humble iPhone
