I was wondering if the 'recent sightings' shown on the landing page could be recent.
today I was greeted by butterfly sightings from May - i.e. six months ago. There must have been thousands of more recent sightings, even within Surrey, since then.

The sightings on the landing page are those that have been added most recently rather than most recent by date. In summer these often equate to the same thing, but later in the year there will be people catching up on their submissions so you will sometimes get some older records thrown in.
