Grid references

Submitted by kittycparker@g… on

I'm fairly new to recording and wanted to ask how specific grid references should be.

I need decent paths for my wheelchair, so I often visit 'engineered' nature spaces created on former colliery or gravel extraction sites. They tend to be about 80 - 150 hectares and are to some extent ecological islands, partly surrounded by housing, industry and roads. I've started entering records using a four digit grid ref covering a square kilometre from roughly the centre of the site, thinking it will be adequate for such easily identifiable and well known sites.

Is that a reasonable assumption?

Thanks.

I record most things to at least 6 figs ie 100m sq but usually 8 figs.  Occasionally 10 figs for static species such as flora (if I find something of note).   If you record at higher res, it can still be used to map at monad or hectad square, but if its only recorded to monad at the outset, that's as good as the record ever will be.  It all depends on the species, how mobile they are or localised the population is likely to be.
