Butterfly or Moth

Hello all,

I'm new to this site and uploaded a pic yesterday (hopefully) of a strange flying insect that landed on a garden plant early afternoon on the shaded part of the garden and stayed for around 4hrs without moving then eventually took flight, hope fully you can recognised what it might be and possibly let me know if it's a rarity?
